# Test Step Dependency

Steps can be dependent on one another based on their status. You can define step dependencies by adding the **Depends on** column to your Steps tab view. The Depends On column allows you to specify which steps must be completed and passed before others become “Ready to Test.”

> [!WARNING]
> Note
>
> The [Create, Edit and Delete Step permission](/v1/docs/roles-permissions) is required to be able to set up step dependencies.
>
> By design, the first step cannot be configured with any dependencies. You can block the first step/test with a defect or by changing the test status to “Not Ready to Test.”

1. Use the **Select Columns** button and turn on the **Depends on** column display. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/f404076c-de23-4609-848e-2dfd4ef701b0/Images/Documentation/image-L0OR5KRH.png)
2. **Double-click on the column** for the relevant step to define the dependency. A step can depend on one or more previous steps. A step will appear as Ready to Test only if all steps selected in this column have been marked as passed.
