# Linking Steps to Defects

Panaya allows you to **link** or **unlink** **test steps**to existing defects. This capability is helpful when Panaya does not automatically recognize the [influence](/v1/docs/what-are-system-wide-defects).

1. Open up a **defect**and select the**Linked steps tab.**

2. Click on **Link Steps****,**then use free-text search to locate the step you wish to link.
3. Select one or more steps and click on the **Link**button. Then **save** the defect.

4. Select the [Influence Type](/v1/docs/what-are-system-wide-defects), i.e., how this defect should influence test and step execution

The defect will appear in the Defects tab for all selected tests after completion.

**Good to Know!** If you manually link or unlink test steps, they will appear as Source = Manual.
